Speech by Renato Gueron, Director, Aracruz

“I have a friend that constantly reminds me of a very important attitude. The great difficulty that we tend to have is to remain within simplicity. In this project, although very difficult and challenging, we had the advantage of staying within simplicity.

The Align method proved this saying on this project. It was a very simple way of handling issues, subjects and discussions, which resulted in a very positive approach and resolution of problems. For the first time, we had all this great help from suppliers, working together with Aracruz on a common objective and towards the success of the project.”

In reference to the Align meetings and methods used on the highly successful projects with Aracruz -

Gas TransBoliviano (GTB)  was awarded the contract to provide compressor stations for the gas pipeline from Bolivia to Brazil.  GTB contracted with AMEC as their EPC supplier for the project and Bolinter as the construction company as part of the AMEC  package.

The project was challenging from the start as Enron was the original EPC partner before their serious financial difficulties. The  Enron problems required GTB to select another EPC partner and AMEC was awarded the contract.  At this time the schedule for project completion was very tight and the compressor stations were located in very remote areas of Bolivia.  In addition to the schedule, location, and other issues, GTB had a corporate mandate that safety is the Number One  priority on their projects.   AMEC and Bolinter accepted this mandate and challenge and made sure safety  was also their Number One priority.  All this resulted in a project with pressure and deadlines on all our groups.

To help the project team focus on these challenges and to work together to achieve its objectives, we brought in the Align™ Group from Atlanta, GA.  A series of Align™ sessions were conducted with the primary project team plus executive sponsors from GTB, Bolinter, and  AMEC.

These Align™ sessions helped our team focus on areas they needed to support each other and helped achieve a successful construction and commissioning of Stage 1 for the Roboro and Izozog compressor substations.  The mission statement drafted by the project team was posted at the job sites and project offices.  This statement expressed the desired working relationship between our three companies.

We appreciate the efforts of the Align™ Group in helping make this project reach a successful conclusion for all our companies and would recommend this process be considered for capital projects around the world.
